In March 2026, after a multi-week trial in Ventura County, Of Counsel Sheryl Lee Reeves and Senior Counsel Win D. Doan secured an amazing trial victory after a very long and hard fought battle! The trial had been continued 12 times, went through three settlement conferences, three judges, four plaintiffs’ lawyers and three defense law firms, and was up against the five-year rule.
The case arose from a rear-end collision involving a fully loaded tractor trailer and a stopped pickup truck occupied by five family members. All five Plaintiffs alleged significant personal injuries, including multiple spinal surgeries and various interventional pain management procedures. In the fourth week of trial following the unexpected dismissal of four of the Plaintiffs, the scope of the case shifted significantly, leading to mid-trial evidentiary and law and motion disputes.
The defense navigated prior discovery challenges, extensive medical records, prior and subsequent claims involving certain Plaintiffs, and complex apportionment issues. Through strategic witness presentation and focused cross-examination, the defense challenged causation, the nature and extent of the claimed injuries, and the reasonableness of the alleged damages. Although plaintiffs’ counsel sought a substantial award, the defense urged the jury to return a verdict consistent with the evidence.
After a brief deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous verdict for the defense. The client was extremely pleased with the outcome.
